Montana Superintendent Susie Hedalen said the state is preparing to take a stronger role in federal education funding by moving to a block grant system (hiring extra staff to match the change).

At the Cascade County Commission meeting on March 11th, $1.2 million was approved to fund the sheriff’s crisis diversion grant program — an initiative started last year to provide mental health services for inmates.

Sheriff Slaughter said more funds are planned soon to expand the program — aiming to keep those with mental illness out of jail.
