CULTURE NEWS

  • Montana ExpoPark announced headliners for the upcoming Montana State Fair in Great Falls which will run from July 25 to August 2—Jo Dee Messina is set for July 27, Tucker Wetmore for July 28, Oak Ridge Boys for July 29, SmashMouth for July 31, Scotty McCreery for August 1, and Lecrae with Gio for August 2. Tickets will go on sale starting April 10 at 8 a.m.  KXLH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • After close Senate votes, the House Education Committee is now considering a bill that would require public schools to report spending for Indian Education for All funds after 150 of 403 districts underreported last session. Sen. Jonathan Windy Boy — the bill sponsor — said the measure aims to boost accountability while supporters say it protects tribal input on Native education requirements.  The Electric
  • Montana's lottery was approved in 1986 to help fund schools and lower property taxes, but much of its surplus has gone into the general fund for teacher retirement programs and a small scholarship fund—leaving concerns that the original promise is not being met after a recent proposal to send more money directly to districts failed.  Montana Public Radio

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Great Falls Chapter of the Mule Deer Foundation is hosting its annual banquet at 5 p.m. at the Elks Lodge to raise funds for conservation efforts such as CWD testing, controlled burns, and habitat improvements — ticket purchases include a prime rib dinner and membership that will support local projects statewide.  KRTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The filing period for candidates for the GFPS board of trustees ended March 27th with four candidates running—incumbents Gordon Johnson and Paige Turoski along with challengers Craig Duff and Tony Rosales. Interested write-in candidates can file at the Cascade County Elections office or the GFPS District Office until April 3rd.  KRTV
  • Great Falls Fire Rescue has called in extra help from the Montana Air National Guard and Malmstrom Airforce Base to fight three structure fires since last Saturday because they can only fight one fire at a time. The strained resources have caused the city's ISO rating to drop to three—raising homeowners' insurance premiums by about 10%.  KRTV
