Good morning, Great Falls.

Neighborhood Council 1 meets on April 8 at 7 p.m. in Meadowlark Elementary School library for an update from Neighborworks Great Falls, council reports and neighborhood concerns—Council 2 meets on April 9 at 5:30 p.m. in West Elementary School library to approve bylaw changes and review flood district information. Council 9 meets on April 10 at 7 p.m. at 1st Church of the Nazarene to discuss a telecommunications variance request, a Facebook update, Neighborhood Watch and a crime mapping report.

Today, Montana SkillsUSA students are competing in Great Falls in a statewide skills competition.

The event is underway as students demonstrate technical and leadership skills — a key part of the program.

Montana lawmakers acted this week as the Senate censured Senator Jason Ellsworth after an ethics probe into a $170,000 contract and the House passed a draft state budget on April 2 after hours of debate.

Legislators also reviewed bills on doula licensing, judge training for abuse cases and veteran suicide prevention while proposals for education tax credits and a child care grant program were tabled.

State lawmakers have proposed bills that would let cities ban urban camping — allowing for fines up to $500 per day—in an effort to address Montana’s homelessness rate, which increased 89 percent from 2007 to 2023.

Supporters favor the local control the measures offer while opponents and advocates argue that the fines are impractical and that more supportive housing is needed.
