COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Great Falls WWII prisoner of war Leonard R. Jackson, who died during the Bataan Death March and was long interred as an unknown, was identified on Dec. 16 through DNA and dental analysis. He will be inurned at Arlington National Cemetery on a future date—DPAA records also show that 458 Montanans from past conflicts remain unaccounted for.  The Electric

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Initial jobless claims in Montana fell to 386 from 406 the week ending September 13, according to the U.S. Department of Labor—nationwide new claims also dropped to 231,000.  Great Falls Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Great Falls Public Schools continue to use escrow funds so classrooms face little impact from Calumet Montana Refining's tax protest, though officials said a final valuation from the Department of Revenue will force a special levy—potentially increasing taxpayers' contributions.  KRTV
  • The Montana State Genealogical Society is holding its 33rd annual conference at Heritage Inn in Great Falls as family history researchers gathered this week to attend workshops and share research techniques — organizers plan to continue the event next fall in Helena.  KXLH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Malmstrom AFB held its annual POW/MIA run Friday morning to honor National POW/MIA Recognition Day as airmen carried the 'You are never forgotten' flag—symbolizing the ongoing promise to account for missing service members. Tech. Sgt. William Schuld said the event was a joint effort to honor those who sacrificed for freedom and to bring closure to their families.  KRTV
  • Airmen at Malmstrom AFB ran on Friday in the annual POW/MIA run to honor National POW/MIA Recognition Day (a tribute to service members who were captured or went missing). Tech. Sgt. William Schuld said the event showed a strong, ongoing promise to return every American home with dignity and honor (a joint effort by the military community).  KXLH
  • Cascade County Commissioners approved a resolution on Sept. 9 to move Disaster and Emergency Services under the Sheriff’s Office due to funding cuts — the county also reactivated the print shop at the DES building with a new employee who began training on Sept. 8 to print ballots for the upcoming November election. DES operations were moved to the CCSO building on July 1, and officials plan to further assess the use of the vacated DES space.  The Electric
  • The November 4 ballot in Great Falls will include contests for mayor, two city commissioners, one municipal court judge and one neighborhood council with a fireworks question—eight neighborhood council races are canceled for having too few candidates. Voters must now include their birth year on green envelopes and ballots will be mailed Oct. 20 as the elections office updates voter profiles.  The Electric
