COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Great Falls Rescue Mission will host a 24-hour live stream where Executive Director Jim McCormick sits on a bench outside the Cameron Family Center from 1 p.m. on October 9 through 1 p.m. on October 10—he will interview community leaders to raise awareness about homelessness and share different perspectives on the issue.  KXLH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montana State University opened its new nursing education building in Great Falls that has classrooms, skills labs, and a simulation center for hands-on training. The facility is the first project in a state plan to expand MSU's nursing program funded by a $101 million donation and a land gift from Benefis, and it is scheduled to be completed in 2026.  KRTV
  • Great Falls Public Library will host its annual AAUW Book Sale starting on October 15 at its third floor in 301 Second Avenue North and will run full-price, half-price, and sack sale events through October 25. Proceeds will support local scholarships, donations to other libraries, and the Great Falls Education Foundation.  KRTV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The first frost has arrived in Great Falls and signals that wintry weather is near as meteorologist Erik Johnson said La Niña conditions are bringing cooler temperatures and more snowfall soon. Local business owner Steve Tilleraas noted that light frost touched pumpkins and reminded residents to protect gardens — prompting careful driving as animals search for shelter.  KXLH

  • Great Falls mayoral candidate Jasmine Taylor faces scrutiny after a photo shows her holding a half-full weed pipe and lighter—her use is legal but has raised concerns among local youth advocates. She will answer drug use questions at a municipal forum on October 20 at 7:00 p.m.  E-City Beat
  • Voters can register for the November municipal election until noon November 3 at the Cascade County elections office as regular registration ends today. On November 4, voters may update or reactivate their registration only at Exhibition Hall at Montana Expo Park and receive ballots that do not include some city races and write-in lines — ballot envelopes require a birth year.  The Electric
  • City Commissioners in Great Falls will consider a $94,792 contract with Matrix Consulting Group today to study the Park and Rec Department & review its fee structures, cost allocation, and operational efficiency. The review is intended to address longstanding financial challenges and set a plan for future improvements.  The Electric

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • NeighborWorks Great Falls has launched the HomeStretch program to help middle-income families buy a house by providing a deferred no interest loan for up to 30% of a home’s purchase price. The program uses $7 million in private funds matched to $14 million by the state and will serve buyers in counties (Cascade, Chouteau, Teton, Toole, Pondera, Blaine and Glacier) earning between 60% and 140% of the area median income.  KXLH

  • CM Russell High ended its two-game losing streak on Oct. 3 with a 25—0 homecoming win over Billings Senior as the Rustler defense forced three turnovers and quarterback Caleb Taylor scored two touchdowns and made a key play on special teams; the team is 2—2 and will play Bozeman High soon before facing Billings Skyview on Oct. 16 and Great Falls High on Oct. 24.  Great Falls Tribune
